Sneakers with dresses is no longer a trend. It’s just how we dress now (thank you fashion Gods for this gift!) The question isn’t whether to do it, it’s how to do it in a way that looks intentional and put-together rather than like you forgot to change your shoes.
I’ll cover which sneakers work best with dresses, which dress styles to pair them with, and the small details (socks, accessories, layers) that make the whole thing look like you meant it. I also share sizing details for each sneaker below.
The Easiest Sneakers to Pair with Dresses
If you’re not sure where to start, start here: Vejas and Adidas Sambas. Both are simple, classic, and low-profile enough to work with almost any dress silhouette. They don’t compete with what you’re wearing; they complete it. If you’re only going to own one pair of sneakers for wearing with dresses, it’s one of these two.
What Sneakers to Wear with Dresses
1. White Leather Sneakers
A dressier sneaker makes the whole combination so much easier, and nothing delivers that better than leather Veja sneakers. Vejas are made in Brazil, have a classic low-profile look, and are comfortable right out of the box. The only catch is that they can be hard to find fully stocked, so you have to be flexible on colorway. I’ve ordered plenty of random color combinations over the years simply because that’s what was available, and it always works out.
I’ve tried several Veja styles and keep coming back to the Veja Esplar and the Recife. The Campo style is similar to the Esplar but runs wider with a thicker sole. I prefer the Esplar for its slightly thinner, more feminine profile. That said, if the Campo is all that’s available, go for it. Just make sure you’re shopping the women’s styles since they’re easy to confuse with men’s. Vejas run in European sizing. I’m a US 6.5 and wear a 37.
Since leather sneakers are immediately a little dressier than most, they’re ideal for styling with dresses. They work just as well with jeans, and they hold up beautifully for a full day on your feet.
If Vejas don’t work well on your foot, try the Steve Madden Momentum sneaker or the Quince Leather Everyday Sneaker as a lace-up alternative. If you want to see even more options beyond this post, I rounded up all my favorite sneakers right now.

2. Canvas Sneakers
Canvas sneakers like Tretorns, Converse Chuck Taylors, are an easy, lightweight option that styles well with dresses all spring and summer. Tretorns in particular have been such a great addition to my closet. They’re affordable, simple, and true-to-size.
For espadrilles, I’ve been a fan of the platform sneaker style for years. The TOMS Valencia Espadrille Platform Sneaker is my pick for this style, I love the low-cut on the foot and the jute-wrapped sole. Espadrille sneakers look best with flowy, summery dresses.

3. Adidas Samba
The Adidas Samba deserves its own callout because it has become one of the most versatile sneakers for wearing with dresses. It’s low-profile, slightly retro, and the gum sole gives it just enough personality without being loud. The classic black and white colorway goes with everything, but it comes in enough options that you can find one that works with your wardrobe. It’s especially good under a maxi or midi dress where you want the shoe to be understated.
4. Chunky & Sporty Sneakers
Here’s where it gets fun. There’s something about a chunky, athletic sneaker with a flowy dress that just works. The contrast is the whole point. The more the shoe looks like it shouldn’t go with the dress, the more intentional the outfit looks when it does. Think ASICS Gel-1130s, New Balance 740s, or a tan runner paired with something feminine and flowy. A little irony goes a long way.
I also love the New Balance 327 for this. It has a flared midsole that hugs the arch and gives the shoe a narrower look despite its chunkier sole. I own two pairs and go up a half size in these.
When pairing chunky sneakers with dresses, keep the dress simple. If the shoe is doing the talking, let it. A solid-color or straightforward silhouette lets the contrast land the right way. I go for cotton t-shirt dresses, tennis dresses, or casual shirt dresses with sportier shoes.
5. Retro & Metallic Sneakers
If you want to lean into what’s trending right now, retro sneakers and metallic sneakers are both big for 2026 and they look great with dresses. The Kallen metallic sneaker and the Valentina in coconut and black are two of my favorites right now. Both pair beautifully with a simple slip dress or anything flowy. See more of what’s trending in my 2026 fashion trends post.
6. Elevated Sneakers
For days when you want a sneaker that reads more polished, the Isabel Marant Beth sneaker is a great pick. The velcro closure and gum sole give it a cool, elevated feel without trying too hard. It bridges the gap between sporty and chic nicely, and the white-and-black colorway goes with everything.

Dresses to Wear with Sneakers
Shirtdress
Shirt dresses are one of the best dresses to wear with sneakers. The structured collar and button-front give the outfit enough polish that the sneakers feel like a deliberate choice, not an afterthought. I love a chambray shirtdress or the Navy Sleeveless Charlie with a clean white sneaker. This Rory White Shirtdress is one of my favorites that I wear on vacation or just for a cute casual spring or summer look. (If you’re in the mood for boots instead, I have a full guide to styling boots with dresses.)
Athleisure Dresses
Athleisure dresses are the most obvious pairing with sneakers, and for good reason. They’re comfortable, functional, and easy. When I want to feel put-together without overthinking it, an athleisure dress with sneakers is always the answer. The Athleta Transcend Dress is a great example of this done right. This Tennis dress from Amazon is especially cute AND useful when chasing two boys around all day. For a more elevated casual look you can’t go wrong with a cute polo dress like this one from Tuckernuck.
Midi Dresses
Midi dresses are a great length for sneakers. You get a little leg showing, which keeps the look balanced and avoids the outfit feeling heavy. I’m 5’1″, so some midi dresses hit more like a maxi on me, but the principle still applies: a little ankle or leg peeking out makes the sneaker feel like part of the outfit. The Jardin Stripe Mitchell Dress and the Glen Dress are two I’ve been loving in this category.
Mini Dresses
Mini dresses are my favorite length to wear with sneakers, especially in spring and summer. The proportions work really well. There’s plenty of leg showing, so the sneaker feels fun and intentional. The Tiered Popover Dress, the Isla Stripe Savanna, and the Light Blue Pique May Polo Dress are all great picks for this. It’s a great combination for errands, casual days out, or easy spring outfits.
Maxi Dresses
I used to skip maxi dresses with sneakers, but I’ve come around on this one. With the right shoe, it works. This Navy Stripe Maxi is a classic that was made for the sneaker/dress combo. The key is keeping the sneaker simple and low-profile. No-show socks are the right call here so nothing interrupts the long, clean line of the dress. A Samba or Veja under a maxi is understated in the best way. See more ideas in my maxi skirt styling guide. Tips for Styling Sneakers with Dresses
Wear the right sneakers.
Skip the running shoes (we’re talking like a Brooks Ghost here). Actual workout sneakers are a no for me with anything other than gym clothes or a tennis dress. Most the sneakers in this post are fashion sneakers. Some look more sporty (like the Asics 1130), but they’re designed for everyday wear, and a little more trendy with the right dress.
Skip the denim jacket.
Sneakers plus a denim jacket over a dress is a combination that’s run its course. If you want to layer, go for a blazer, a trench, a linen shirt tied at the waist. Those options look more current and give the outfit more dimension.
Think about your socks.
Socks matter more than people think. With a short dress (mini or midi), a low ankle sock actually looks more modern than a no-show. It’s a small detail that reads intentional. These are my favorite ruffle ankle socks for this type of look. With a maxi dress, no-show socks are the right call so nothing interrupts the line of the outfit. These no-show socks from Amazon are my go-to for maxis and longer hems.
Balance the proportions.
If your sneakers are chunky, keep the dress simple. If the sneakers are minimal and low-profile, you can go for more print or texture in the dress. One thing should lead the outfit. Either the shoes or the dress, not both at once.
Use accessories to make it look intentional.
This is the tip that makes the biggest difference. Sneakers with a dress can look amazing or sloppy depending on what you do with the rest of the outfit. A hat, a great bag, a blazer thrown on top, or a coat instantly signals that the sneakers were a choice, and a good one. Color helps too: pick up one color from your sneaker or dress in a second accessory and the whole look ties together. I still keep the jewelry simple (see my everyday jewelry picks) and go for a crossbody or tote over anything too structured or dressy.
Think about your activity.
For example, sneakers with a dress is genuinely the right call for a golf tournament. You’re walking 18 holes and on your feet all day, so comfort matters as much as the outfit. I break down exactly what to wear in my golf tournament outfit guide.
Not Feeling Sneakers? Try Loafers or Boat Shoes.
Loafers and Boat Shoes are an underrated option that don’t get enough credit. They’re almost as comfortable as sneakers but look noticeably more polished, which makes them great for when you want the ease of a flat shoe without the casual vibe. The Loraine Bit Loafer is one I’ve been wearing a lot lately with dresses. I have a full guide to styling loafers if you’re building out your flat shoe wardrobe. The Sperry Slim Boat Shoe is another great comfortable alternative to sneakers. My Boat Shoe styling guide is worth checking out if that’s more your speed.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been on the fence about wearing sneakers with dresses, I hope this helped. The basics are simple: pick the right shoe for the dress length, think about your socks, layer intentionally, and skip the denim jacket. The rest is just having fun with it. I’m not a Golden Goose person, but if you have a sneaker you love that I haven’t mentioned, drop it in the comments!
